Storage Box Index · July 2026
What a standard storage unit costs in Australia
One unit, one measure, every month: the median standard (ongoing) price of a standard 9 m² self-storage unit — about the size of a single garage.
National median standard rate, net of GST, July 2026 — the ongoing price after any introductory period. The promo-inclusive advertised median is $260. -1.2% on last month, measured across the same units. Based on 1,823 units.
By capital city
The parity column indexes each city against the national median (= 100). Sydney at 142 means a standard box costs 42% more there than the national middle.

The advertised price is often a promotion
About 37% of advertised units carry a promotion. Among the listings that also show an original price, the median discount is 50%.
Not every operator publishes an original price, so the discount figure describes the listings that do. Promotional rates are usually introductory: check the ongoing rate before you sign.

The Storage Box Index headline is the median standard (post-introductory) monthly price of a 9 m² unit, net of GST: each current listing's ongoing rate is divided by its floor area and scaled to 9 m², then medianed across the providers we track. It is computed live from the same data as our API and AI tools, so every surface publishes the same number, and the advertised (promo-inclusive) median is reported alongside. The national figure pools every capital-city market. Month-on-month change uses a matched panel on the advertised series: the same units priced in both months, so a change reflects a real price move rather than a shift in which facilities we happened to measure. A city is published only once it clears a minimum sample, so thin months are withheld rather than estimated.
Prices are advertised public rates, GST-inclusive: a snapshot of what operators choose to advertise, not a guarantee of availability or of the final price you are quoted. A promotional rate is not the rate you pay once the promotion ends. Data confidence: high. Updated July 2026.
